    Presentation

This Declaration has been developed within the framework of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union and as a result of a co-creation process involving many European cities and urban stakeholders.

This Declaration was signed by a large number of Mayors during the high-level event entitled “A European urban policy fit for the future” organised on 24 January 2024 by the Brussels-Capital Region.

With this Declaration, European Mayors and urban networks are calling for an ambitious European urban policy and are presenting six recommendations to the European institutions for the EU mandate 2024-2029:

    1. Establish systematic dialogue and involvement of local governments at European level.
    2. Insure  a better integration and coordination of urban matters at European level.
    3. Adopt more urban-friendly EU regulations.
    4. Making EU funding more accessible and urban-friendly.
    5. Promoting metropolitan governance.
    6. Shifting the paradigm towards a new sustainable model for cities.

The Brussels-Capital Region will defend and promote these recommendations throughout the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

All cities and metropolitan areas are invited to sign the declaration (see the button below).
